This textbook is primarily intended for students studying Surveying and Geomatics and who have eight years of general English at school. It covers the course and examination programme for the subject English language.
The general objective: the development of language skills for correct, fluent expression, and at an intermediate-advanced level, both in writing and orally.
The scope: developing the ability to recognize, understand, comment and practice the learned linguistic constructions, the correct use of general and English for specific purposes vocabulary.
Learning technical English is considered as a cohesive process requiring varied cognitive capabilities and skills: reading comprehension, the writing and speaking that are involved in the communication process as aspects of linguistic knowledge. The capabilities and skills have already been acquired in the student’s native technical language and should be targeted in technical English also. This requires an attempt to develop greater student sensitivity to the way of thinking in engineering technical English as one variant of English, a language that prefers a certain specific discourse and syntactic structures to others. Technical terminology is also a characteristic of technical English.
